Madurai: The Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), led by actor-politician Vijay, is set to hold its second state conference on August 21, 2025, in Parapathi, Madurai, prompting local authorities to declare a holiday for private schools and colleges in nearby areas due to anticipated traffic congestion and large crowds. The event, expected to draw significant participation, is poised to be a major political gathering ahead of the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections.
Preparations for the TVK conference are in full swing at the Parapathi venue along the Madurai-Thoothukudi National Highway. A grand stage, measuring 200 feet long and 60 feet wide, has been erected to accommodate the event. The venue spans nearly 200 acres to host thousands of volunteers and supporters. A 100-foot-high flagpole is being set up, and TVK flags line a 2-kilometer stretch from Parapathi to Aaviyur, creating a festive atmosphere. Volunteers and locals are actively visiting the site as preparations reach their final stages.
To cater to the expected crowd, TVK has organized the preparation of 5 lakh snack packs for distribution to volunteers attending the conference. Each pack includes drinking water, biscuits, a snack mix, and glucose. Notably, water bottles will feature stickers of Vijay, TVK’s president and the people’s preferred Chief Ministerial candidate for 2026. The task of preparing these packs has engaged residents from Parapathi, Aaviyur, and Vayankulam, with five groups producing one lakh packs each. Workers are being paid Rs. 250 per day for their efforts, and the packs will be distributed to attendees upon entry to the venue.
In anticipation of heavy crowds and potential traffic disruptions on the Madurai-Thoothukudi road, private schools and colleges in Eliyarpathi, Valiyankulam, and Kariyapatti have declared a holiday on August 21, 2025. The decision aims to minimize inconvenience for students and staff amid expected congestion caused by the influx of TVK supporters and vehicles. The Madurai district police have also announced traffic diversions to manage the flow of vehicles, urging attendees to avoid two-wheeler travel to reduce congestion risks.
With an estimated 1.25 lakh party cadres and thousands of supporters expected to attend, the Madurai district administration has deployed over 3,000 police personnel to ensure security and manage traffic. The conference, set to run from 3:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., will take place on a 500-acre site near Koodakovil, equipped with parking facilities. Designated routes have been announced for vehicles coming from various districts, including diversions through Dindigul, Tirumangalam, and Karaikudi to streamline traffic flow.
The TVK conference in Parapathi is seen as a pivotal moment for the party, following its first state conference in Vikravandi in October 2024, which drew over 8 lakh attendees. Vijay, the party’s president, has described the event as a “turning point” in Tamil Nadu’s political history, aiming to position TVK as a formidable force for the 2026 elections. The conference will highlight TVK’s ideology of secular social justice and its commitment to challenging established political players like the DMK and AIADMK.
