He clinched his first World Championship gold at 18 in the men's 54 kg category at the 2019 World Taekwondo Championships in Manchester, defeating Russia's Georgy Popov 53–24. In 2023, Bae secured his second World Championship gold in the men's 58 kg category in Baku, Azerbaijan, marking the first gold medal for South Korea at that event.
