The Visuals

Expert Rating
The Visuals
Positives:
  • The overall design of the 2023 Yamaha FZ-X remains largely unchanged from the previous model.
  • Its styling takes inspiration from the XSR155, which is clearly visible in its tough and rugged appearance.
  • Features like fork gaiters, dual-purpose tires, a ribbed seat, and a square-shaped fuel tank enhance its retro-modern appeal.
  • For the 2023 update, Yamaha has introduced a new navy blue paint scheme for the FZ-X.
  • This new colour option makes the bike look even more aligned with the XSR series in terms of design.
  • Alongside the blue, the inclusion of golden alloy wheels adds a more upscale touch to the bike’s appearance.
  • When it comes to build quality, there isn’t much to complain about.
  • The overall construction and the quality of the switchgear appear solid and well-built.
  • However, Yamaha had the opportunity to enhance the premium feel of the bike, which it hasn't fully capitalized on.

The Package

Expert Rating
The Package
Positives:
  • The earlier version of the FZ-X already offered a respectable set of features, making it competitive with its segment rivals.
  • For the 2023 model, Yamaha has enhanced the feature list by introducing a few notable additions.
  • One of these updates includes new LED turn indicators that come with smoked covers.
  • These new indicators blend well with the bike’s existing LED daytime running light (DRL) and LED projector headlamp.
  • However, the standout feature on the 2023 Yamaha FZ-X is the introduction of a traction control system.
  • This system is quite rare for bikes in this category and is the same one found on the R15 V4 and the updated FZ-S.
  • It functions by intermittently reducing power below 3000rpm to minimize tyre slip during aggressive acceleration.
  • The system performs effectively and will be especially helpful for less experienced riders.
  • In addition to this, the FZ-X continues to offer a single-channel ABS for braking safety.
  • It also includes an LCD display that shows essential data like rpm, a tachometer, two trip meters, and a clock.

The Ride

Expert Rating
The Ride
Positives:
  • The engine, which produces 12.2bhp and 13.3Nm of torque, generally feels smooth and refined.
  • It runs effortlessly between 60-70kmph, delivering decent mid-range performance up to around 6000rpm.
  • However, beyond that point, the engine begins to feel strained and produces noticeable vibrations through the foot pegs and handlebar.
  • During our ride, the bike only managed to reach a top speed of 105kmph, which is somewhat underwhelming for a 150cc motorcycle.
  • Furthermore, the FZ-X often lacks the power needed for swift overtakes.
  • It usually requires a bit of effort and a downshift to pick up speed quickly.
  • On a positive note, the comfort offered by the motorcycle during our brief time with it was quite impressive.
  • The seat is not only broad and spacious but also provides good cushioning.
  • The riding position is upright, with slightly pulled-back handlebars and centrally placed footpegs.
  • The fuel tank is wide and offers excellent support for the thighs.
  • Additionally, the suspension setup handled rough and broken roads quite well, absorbing bumps with ease.
  • All in all, the overall ride experience is smooth, comfortable, and free from fatigue.
