 Kerala's Timeless Coastal Gem

          Kovalam is a coastal resort located in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, India. Situated 12.6 km (7.8 mi) southeast of the city center, Kovalam is renowned for its scenic beaches. It is a favored spot for tourists from both within India and abroad, attracting visitors with its picturesque seaside environment.

History

          Kovalam gained prominence in the late 1920s when the Regent Maharani Sethu Lakshmi Bayi of Travancore established her beach retreat, Halcyon Castle, in the area. The spotlight on Kovalam was further enhanced by her nephew, the Maharaja of Travancore, who drew attention to its potential. By the 1930s, European visitors to the Travancore kingdom recognized Kovalam Beach as an emerging tourist destination. The transformation of Kovalam from a modest fishing village to a notable tourist hotspot began in the early 1970s, when a wave of hippies traveling to Ceylon via the Hippie Trail discovered its charm.

Geography

Beaches
          Kovalam’s coastline, stretching 17 km, is distinguished by three main beaches separated by rocky outcrops, collectively forming a crescent shape:

• Lighthouse Beach: The southernmost beach, named after the 36-meter Vizhinjam Lighthouse perched atop Kurumkal Hillock.
• Hawah Beach: Also known as Eve’s Beach, featuring a high rock promontory and a bay, predominantly frequented by local fishermen.
• Samudra Beach: Located north of Lighthouse Beach, separated by a large promontory, and similarly used by local fishermen.
• Ashoka Beach: Noted for its sea-wall offering elevated sea views and shallow, swimmable waters.

Tourist Facilities

          Kovalam boasts numerous beach resorts and is located approximately 3 km from the Vizhinjam seaport, known for its diverse fish varieties and historic Hindu temples, churches, and mosques. The proposed International Transshipment Terminal at Vizhinjam is also in proximity.

          During the hippie era, Kovalam emerged as a premier tourist destination. Today, it continues to attract visitors, particularly from Europe and Israel. The area is gaining renewed significance due to its array of Ayurvedic salons and wellness resorts offering various Ayurvedic treatments. One of the pioneering establishments, Kovalam Beach Resort, was designed by the renowned architect Charles Correa and opened between 1969 and 1974.
