Although the team finished as runners-up, Iyer's captaincy and batting played a key role in the team's success. Unfortunately, an injury in 2021 forced him to miss a significant part of the season.
Captaincy Era with Kolkata Knight Riders and New Challenges (2022-2025)
In the 2022 IPL auction, Iyer was bought by Kolkata Knight Riders for ₹12.25 crore and was immediately appointed as captain. Even though the team had an inconsistent season and finished seventh, Iyer remained the top run-scorer for the franchise that year with over 400 runs.A back injury ruled him out of the entire 2023 season, but he made a strong comeback in 2024. Returning as captain, he led Kolkata Knight Riders to the top of the league table and eventually guided them to the IPL title by defeating Sunrisers Hyderabad in the final. With this achievement, Iyer became the first captain to lead two different teams to IPL finals.Ahead of the 2025 season, KKR released him and he was later signed by Punjab Kings, where he was once again given the captaincy role. While the team faced some tough results in finals across different T20 leagues, Iyer continued to be recognized as a determined leader and a key middle-order batsman in modern T20 cricket.
International Debut and Early Impact (2017-2019)
He began his international journey in 2017 when he was included in India's Test squad as a replacement for Virat Kohli during the Test series against Australia national cricket team. Although he did not get the chance to bat in that match, he made a notable contribution in the field by running out steve O'keef. Later that year, Iyer received his first opportunity in international cricket when he was selected for India's T20I squad against New Zealand national cricket team. Iyer continued as captain and led a new-look squad with Rishabh Pant serving as vice-captain. Under his guidance, Delhi improved significantly and reached the playoffs after many years. The team continued its progress in 2020, finishing among the top teams in the league stage and eventually reaching their first-ever IPL final. Although they were defeated by Mumbai Indians in the final, the season was widely considered the most successful campaign in the franchise's history, with Iyer playing a major role as captain.
Challenges and Title Triumph with Kolkata Knight Riders
Ahead of the 2022 season, Iyer moved to Kolkata Knight Riders after being released by Delhi. The franchise showed great faith in his leadership by appointing him captain soon after the auction. The team carried that momentum into the final and defeated Sunrisers Hyderabad to secure their third IPL title. With this achievement, Iyer joined the list of successful captains who have led Kolkata to championship glory.
New Era with Punjab Kings

The franchise aimed to rebuild its squad and develop a strong core around players such as Yuzvendra Chahal, Marco Jansen, and Arshdeep Singh.Under Iyer's leadership, the team showed remarkable improvement during the 2025 season. Punjab Kings performed consistently throughout the league stage and secured a place in the playoffs after many years. They even reached the final, narrowly missing out on the title after a close match against Royal Challengers Bengaluru.
