Supreme Court on Thug Life Film: Keep Fire Extinguishers in Theaters

The Supreme Court has refused to grant protection to theaters screening the film 'Thug Life' in Karnataka, amid threats from Kannada organizations protesting its release. Instead, the court suggested that theaters should keep fire extinguishers as a precaution.

Thug Life Movie Controversy

Directed by Mani Ratnam and starring Kamal Haasan and Simbu, the movie 'Thug Life' was released last Thursday. Anticipation had been high following the launch of the trailer and songs. However, a recent speech by Kamal Haasan regarding the Kannada language triggered backlash in Karnataka.

In response, members of the Kannada Rakshana Vedike threatened to set fire to theaters that dared to screen the film. This prompted the Karnataka Theatre Association to file a petition in the Supreme Court seeking security and protection.

The petition was heard by a bench led by Justice P.K. Mishra. The petitioner’s counsel emphasized the credible threats made to theater owners and requested central protection for cinema halls.

Justice Mishra, however, dismissed the plea and remarked, “If you fear that the theaters will be set on fire, keep a fire extinguisher.” The court further advised the association to approach the High Court for such matters.

This decision has triggered mixed reactions from the public, legal experts, and cinema enthusiasts. Many argue that the safety of property and life should be a priority, especially when freedom of expression is under threat.

As 'Thug Life' continues its run in theaters outside Karnataka, cinema owners in the state remain uncertain about its screening amid growing tensions and lack of protection.
