The encounter took place on October 27, 2025, at a private resort in Poonjeri, Mamallapuram near Chennai - a departure from tradition that has sparked both empathy and debate.
The families were transported from Karur the previous day in TVK-arranged vehicles and accommodated at the resort. Vijay spent nearly three hours meeting each family individually, offering personal condolences, apologies, and assurances of long-term support. While some see the gesture as sincere, others question the choice of venue over home visits.

According to family members who spoke to the media, Vijay met each bereaved household separately in a quiet room at the resort. He reportedly knelt before several parents, held the hands of widows, and wept with children who lost mothers and fathers in the tragedy.
“He said he was sorry for not coming to our homes earlier,” shared R. Lakshmi, who lost her 19-year-old son. “He promised education for my daughter, a job for my husband, and monthly assistance until the children are settled. He gave his personal number and said to call anytime.”
Another father, K. Murugan, recounted: “Vijay sir apologized for the rally mismanagement. He said ‘this should never have happened’ and assured us TVK will stand by us like family.” The actor-politician reportedly handed over initial relief cheques and committed to building memorial parks in victims’ names.
Traditionally, political leaders visit victims’ homes after tragedies. Vijay’s decision to host families at a resort 400 km away drew criticism from opposition parties. DMK spokesperson T. Kumar called it “insensitive optics,” while AIADMK’s Edappadi Palaniswami said, “Real leaders go to the people, not summon them.”
TVK sources defended the move, citing security threats in Karur and logistical challenges. “Post-tragedy, emotions are raw. A public visit could trigger unrest or political clashes,” a senior leader explained. “We ensured privacy, safety, and dignity for the families.”
The party arranged AC buses, medical teams, and counselors for the journey. Families were served meals and given return travel allowances. TVK claims over 120 members from 38 affected families attended - the largest such gathering since the incident.
On September 27, 2025, TVK held its first major public rally in Karur to launch Vijay’s political journey. Over 3 lakh supporters gathered - far exceeding the venue’s 1.5 lakh capacity. Poor crowd management, narrow exit gates, and sudden rain triggered panic.
The stampede began near the main stage when VIP vehicles tried to exit. In the chaos:
A judicial inquiry was ordered. Preliminary reports blamed inadequate policing, lack of emergency exits, and over-enthusiastic mobilization. TVK accepted moral responsibility and announced ₹25 lakh ex-gratia per family - higher than government compensation.
The Karur stampede was a major setback for TVK, launched with fanfare in 2024. Vijay’s clean image took a hit as critics accused the party of prioritizing spectacle over safety. The Mamallapuram meeting is seen as a strategic rehabilitation effort.
Political analyst S. Vijayakumar observed: “Vijay needed to show accountability without exposing himself to hostile crowds. This controlled environment allowed genuine interaction while managing optics.”
TVK has since revamped its event protocol - mandating police clearance, capacity audits, and multiple exit routes. Vijay has personally overseen safety drills at subsequent rallies.
Despite the unconventional setting, most families expressed gratitude. “He didn’t have to meet us at all. Many leaders just send cheques,” said P. Selvi, who lost her sister. “Vijay sir cried with us. That means something.”
Some, however, felt the resort meeting lacked the personal touch of a home visit. “We wanted him in our village, among our people,” said a relative. TVK promised follow-up visits by local leaders.
The party has set up a TVK Victims Support Cell in Karur, offering legal aid, counseling, and job placement. Education scholarships for 60 children have been confirmed.
The Tamil Nadu government announced ₹10 lakh compensation per deceased and free treatment for the injured. A one-man judicial commission under retired Justice M. Sathyanarayanan is probing lapses.
Interim findings suggest:
TVK has submitted a detailed compliance report and suspended three organizers. Vijay has pledged full cooperation with the inquiry.
As TVK gears up for the 2026 Assembly polls, the Karur stampede remains a defining moment. Vijay’s handling of the crisis - from immediate relief to personal outreach - will shape public perception.
Supporters see the Mamallapuram meeting as proof of his compassion. Detractors call it staged. But for the families, it was a rare moment of closure with the man whose rally changed their lives forever.
As one mother whispered while leaving the resort: “He didn’t just give money. He gave us his tears. That’s something no leader has done.” In Tamil politics, where empathy often loses to strategy, Vijay may have just rewritten the rulebook.
