Pope Francis Funeral: Date, Venue, Attendees & What Comes Next

When and Where is the Funeral?

The ceremony will begin at 10:00 AM local time (1:30 PM IST) in St. Peter’s Square, a majestic Baroque plaza that has witnessed centuries of Church history. Massive crowds are expected, as faithful from around the world gather to pay their last respects.

A Humble Resting Place

In a final act of humility, Pope Francis requested not to be buried at St. Peter’s like many of his predecessors. Instead, he chose St. Mary Major Basilica, a church in Rome that held deep personal significance for him. His tomb will be simple — no elaborate decorations, just an inscription in Latin: “Franciscus.”

Where is Pope Francis’ Body Now?

Before the funeral, Pope Francis is lying in state at the Santa Marta residence, where he lived during his papacy. His body, placed in an open casket, is being viewed privately by Vatican residents and the papal household.

On April 23, a solemn procession will carry his body to St. Peter’s Basilica. His casket will be placed directly on the floor of the basilica, near the Paschal candle, where thousands of mourners will pay their respects.

Who Will Attend the Funeral?

World leaders and dignitaries from around the globe are expected to attend, including:

  • U.S. President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump
  • Argentinian President Javier Milei
  • Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and his wife Janja
  • United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres

What’s Next for the Catholic Church?

With the funeral complete, the Church enters a period called “sede vacante” — meaning “vacant seat.” During this time, Cardinal Kevin Farrell, the camerlengo, will manage Vatican affairs until a new pope is elected.

A conclave of cardinals will convene by early May to choose the next pope. Among the early favorites are Luis Antonio Tagle from the Philippines and Pietro Parolin from Italy.
