India, one of the largest aviation markets in the world, has witnessed several tragic plane crashes that have not only taken hundreds of lives but also raised critical concerns about aviation safety standards. As the world recovers from the shock of the recent Ahmedabad Air India plane crash, it’s important to revisit some of the worst air disasters that have happened across Indian skies.

1996 Charkhi Dadri Mid-Air Collision – The Deadliest Ever

The most catastrophic aviation accident in Indian history occurred on November 12, 1996. A Kazakhstan Airlines Ilyushin Il-76 cargo aircraft and a Saudi Arabian Airlines Boeing 747 passenger jet collided mid-air over Charkhi Dadri, Haryana. The collision happened at around 14,000 feet due to a communication gap—specifically, the Kazakh pilots' inability to understand English instructions from Delhi air traffic control. This tragic incident killed all 349 people on board both planes, making it one of the world’s deadliest mid-air collisions.

1978 Air India Crash in the Arabian Sea

On January 1, 1978, an Air India flight departing from Mumbai crashed into the Arabian Sea just minutes after takeoff. The aircraft was carrying 213 passengers, all of whom tragically perished. The cause was attributed to instrument failure and pilot disorientation, which led to a fatal dive into the ocean. This remains one of the deadliest early aviation disasters in India.

2010 Mangalore Plane Crash – Runway Overshoot

On May 22, 2010, Air India Express Flight IX812 from Dubai to Mangalore overshot the runway at the Mangalore International Airport. The Boeing 737-800 aircraft crashed into a nearby gorge and burst into flames. Out of 166 people on board, 158 passengers lost their lives. It was one of India’s deadliest air accidents caused by runway overshooting and poor braking conditions during landing.

1988 Indian Airlines Crash in Ahmedabad

In 1988, an Indian Airlines Boeing 737 flying from Mumbai to Ahmedabad crashed during landing, killing 133 passengers. The aircraft hit trees near the runway due to inadequate visibility and insufficient lighting at the airport. This accident raised major concerns about airport infrastructure and night landing protocols.

1990 Bangalore Airport Crash

Another tragedy struck Indian aviation in 1990 when an Indian Airlines Airbus A320 with 146 passengers crashed while landing at Bengaluru airport. The flight crashed into a nearby golf course due to miscommunication and a delay in instructions from air traffic control. A total of 92 lives were lost in this incident.

2020 Kozhikode Air India Express Crash

Under the Vande Bharat Mission in 2020, an Air India Express Boeing 737 was bringing stranded Indian nationals from Dubai to Kozhikode. While landing in heavy rain, the aircraft skidded off the table-top runway and plunged 110 feet into a valley. The plane broke into multiple pieces. Out of 190 passengers on board, 21 people died, including the pilot and co-pilot. Remarkably, 75 passengers survived with serious injuries.

Conclusion: India’s Air Safety Evolution

While India has progressed significantly in terms of aviation infrastructure, these historical and recent plane crashes serve as a reminder of the vulnerabilities that still exist. From mid-air collisions to runway skids, every accident has brought to light issues like language barriers, communication errors, poor visibility, and airport safety lapses.

Each of these tragedies led to reviews and updates in aviation protocols. However, it remains crucial for aviation authorities, airlines, and pilots to continue prioritizing safety above all else. With air traffic rising year by year, ensuring rigorous standards and international cooperation is essential to avoid future disasters in Indian skies.
