BJP Seeks to Reunite TTV Dhinakaran and OPS in Tamil Nadu Alliance Strategy
In a significant development in Tamil Nadu politics, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is reportedly working to strengthen its BJP AIADMK alliance by bringing back key figures TTV Dhinakaran and O Panneerselvam (OPS). BJP state president Nainar Nagendran recently met with national president JP Nadda in Delhi to discuss strategies for consolidating the NDA alliance in Tamil Nadu. The meeting focused on leveraging the substantial vote banks of Dhinakaran’s Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam (AMMK) and OPS’s faction in the southern districts, where they wield significant influence. As the 2026 Tamil Nadu elections approach, this move underscores the BJP’s intent to unify opposition forces against the ruling DMK.
The BJP AIADMK alliance, rekindled earlier this year under the leadership of Union Home Minister Amit Shah and AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami (EPS), aims to challenge the DMK’s dominance in the state. However, the exclusion of Dhinakaran and OPS has been a point of contention, given their electoral influence, particularly among the Mukkulathor community. During the Delhi meeting, Nadda reportedly advised Nagendran to initiate talks with both leaders to explore their reintegration into the alliance without interfering in AIADMK’s internal affairs. This strategic move is seen as an effort to bolster the NDA’s electoral prospects by consolidating fragmented vote bases in key regions.
Strategic Importance of TTV Dhinakaran and OPS
TTV Dhinakaran, the leader of AMMK, and O Panneerselvam, a former AIADMK stalwart, hold significant sway in southern Tamil Nadu. Their vote share in the previous elections demonstrated their ability to influence electoral outcomes, particularly in constituencies dominated by the Mukkulathor community. The BJP’s interest in bringing them back into the fold is driven by the need to strengthen the NDA alliance in Tamil Nadu ahead of the 2026 assembly elections. Sources indicate that the BJP is considering allocating seats to Dhinakaran and OPS from its own quota within the alliance, ensuring a seamless integration without disrupting AIADMK’s internal dynamics.
JP Nadda’s Directive and AIADMK’s Response
During the discussions, JP Nadda emphasized the importance of a united opposition to counter the DMK’s stronghold. He reportedly instructed Nagendran to engage with TTV Dhinakaran and OPS to negotiate their return, highlighting their potential to enhance the alliance’s electoral strength. Additionally, Nadda advised informing AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami about these efforts to maintain transparency within the coalition. However, AIADMK spokesperson Vaigaichelvan’s recent statements suggest a cautious approach. He indicated that Dhinakaran might join the NDA alliance only if EPS is accepted as the chief ministerial candidate, revealing underlying tensions within the coalition.
Vaigaichelvan, while addressing reporters in Kanchipuram, sidestepped questions about whether the EPS faction would accept OPS as a chief ministerial candidate. This ambiguity highlights the complex dynamics within the BJP AIADMK alliance, where leadership aspirations and regional influence play a critical role. The spokesperson also took a swipe at Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) leader Vijay, criticizing his recent remarks as immature and pointing out that public gatherings, such as the one in Dindigul attended by 60,000 people to see actress Nayanthara, do not necessarily translate into political capital.
Challenges and Opportunities in Coalition Politics
The BJP’s efforts to reunite with Dhinakaran and OPS come at a time when Tamil Nadu politics is witnessing heightened activity. The 2026 Tamil Nadu elections are expected to be fiercely contested, with the DMK leveraging its governance record and the opposition seeking to capitalize on anti-incumbency sentiments. The inclusion of Dhinakaran and OPS could significantly enhance the NDA’s electoral prospects, particularly in southern districts where their influence is undeniable. However, navigating the delicate balance between AIADMK’s internal leadership dynamics and the BJP’s broader coalition strategy poses a significant challenge.
The BJP’s approach to allocating seats from its own quota reflects a pragmatic strategy to accommodate allies without directly challenging EPS’s leadership within AIADMK. This move is also seen as a response to the growing influence of emerging players like TVK, which has been attempting to carve out a space in the state’s political landscape. By consolidating its alliance with experienced leaders like Dhinakaran and OPS, the BJP aims to present a united front that can effectively challenge the DMK’s electoral machinery.
Broader Implications for Tamil Nadu’s Political Landscape
The potential return of TTV Dhinakaran and OPS to the BJP AIADMK alliance could reshape the political dynamics in Tamil Nadu. Their inclusion would not only strengthen the NDA’s vote share but also signal a shift towards a more inclusive opposition strategy. However, the success of this initiative hinges on the BJP’s ability to mediate between competing interests within the alliance. EPS’s acceptance as the chief ministerial candidate remains a contentious issue, and any misstep could jeopardize the coalition’s unity.
Furthermore, the BJP’s efforts to expand its footprint in Tamil Nadu are part of a broader national strategy to strengthen the NDA’s presence in southern states. The party’s recent engagement with Dhinakaran, including a meeting between Nadda and former state president Annamalai, underscores its commitment to building a robust coalition. As the 2026 Tamil Nadu elections draw closer, the BJP’s ability to navigate these complex negotiations will be critical to its success.
The evolving political scenario in Tamil Nadu also highlights the challenges of coalition politics in a state with deep-rooted regional identities. While the BJP’s outreach to Dhinakaran and OPS is a step towards consolidating opposition forces, it must tread carefully to avoid alienating its primary ally, AIADMK. The coming months will be crucial in determining whether this strategic realignment can translate into electoral gains for the NDA alliance in Tamil Nadu.
