Air India Plane Crash in Ahmedabad – Over 200 Feared Dead Live Update

Ahmedabad, June 12, 2025 – Tragedy struck on Thursday afternoon when an Air India Boeing 787 Dreamliner, operating as Flight AI171 from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick, crashed shortly after takeoff from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport.

The aircraft was carrying 242 people, including 230 passengers and 12 crew members, when it went down in the Meghani area, a densely populated residential zone. Just five minutes after takeoff, the plane lost contact with air traffic control after issuing a MAYDAY distress call.

The crash triggered a massive explosion and fire, intensified by the aircraft’s heavy fuel load. Visuals from the scene, now widely circulated on social media, show towering plumes of black smoke rising into the sky.

Emergency services responded swiftly. Six NDRF teams, fire engines, ambulances, and local police units were immediately mobilized for rescue and recovery operations. Officials are still working tirelessly at the crash site.

As of now, 204 bodies have been recovered, according to a statement made to Reuters by Ahmedabad Police Commissioner. Authorities have confirmed that one passenger, a British national named Vishwash, has survived, raising faint hopes of more possible survivors. The police have said they cannot rule out the possibility of finding more survivors.

The aircraft’s passenger manifest included:

  • 169 Indian nationals

  • 53 British nationals

  • 7 Portuguese citizens

  • 1 Canadian national

Among the passengers was former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani, who was also on board the ill-fated flight to London. His status is yet to be officially confirmed. Reacting to the devastating crash, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep sorrow. In an emotional message posted on X (formerly Twitter), he said: “The tragedy in Ahmedabad has stunned and saddened us. It is heartbreaking beyond words. In this sad hour, my thoughts are with everyone affected by it.” The Prime Minister added that he is in constant contact with senior ministers and authorities to ensure all necessary support reaches the victims and their families. Union Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu and Home Minister Amit Shah are currently on their way to Ahmedabad to oversee ongoing rescue efforts and provide on-ground support.
