Srividya was born on 24 July 1953 in Madras now Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India, into a Tamil family. Her father was the comedian Krishnamurthy and her mother was the Carnatic classical singer M. L. Vasanthakumari. She grew up in a family facing financial difficulties after her father illness. Srividya began her acting career at a young age, debuting in Malayalam cinema as a teenager. She broke into Tamil cinema with films such as Apoorva Raagangal 1975 directed by K. Balachander, which gave her wide recognition. Over the years she transitioned into character roles, especially memorable mother roles in Malayalam and Tamil films.Despite professional success, her personal life was marked by struggles including heartbreak, marital issues and legal battles. In 2003 she was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer, and after treatment for several years she passed away on 19 October 2006 in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, India, at the age of 53.
