Vijayaraj Alagarswami was born on 25 August 2023 in Madurai, Madras State, India, and in the Tamil film industry, he was known as Vijayakanth. Inikkum Ilamai is the first movie of Vijayakanth, released in 1979, in which he acted in a small supporting role. In 1980, Doorathu Idi Muzhakkam was the first movie of Vijayakanth in which he acted as the hero. The movie Captain Prabhakaran in 1991 gave him the nickname "Captain." Vijayakanth won two Filmfare Awards South, three Tamil Nadu State Film Awards, and was awarded the Kalaimamani title in 2001. From 2000 to 2006, Vijayakanth served as the president of Nadigar Sangam. Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) is a political party founded by Vijayakanth in 2005, and in 2006, DMDK contested all 234 seats in Tamil Nadu, with Vijayakanth winning in the Virudhachalam constituency. In the 2011 assembly election, Vijayakanth's party DMDK won 29 seats in Tamil Nadu, becoming the official opposition in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly.2016, due to health issues, led to Vijayakanth stepping back from active politics. On 28 December 2023, Vijayakanth died at the age of 71.
