Top 10 Government Initiatives for Farmers (2025)
1. Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN) This flagship program provides direct income support of ₹6,000 annually to all landowning farming families. The amount is disbursed in three equal installments of ₹2,000 every four months directly into bank accounts via the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) system.
2. Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY)
A comprehensive crop insurance plan designed to protect farmers against yield losses from natural calamities, pests, and diseases. Farmers pay a nominal premium—2% for Kharif, 1.5% for Rabi, and 5% for commercial/horticultural crops—while the government covers the remainder.
3. Kisan Credit Card (KCC) Scheme
KCC ensures that farmers have timely access to short-term credit at low interest rates. By repaying promptly, farmers can secure loans up to ₹3 lakh at an effective interest rate of just 4%, helping them cover production costs and urgent expenses.
4. Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana (PMKSY)
Focused on the motto "Per Drop More Crop," this scheme promotes water-use efficiency through micro-irrigation systems like drip and sprinkler irrigation.
The government provides substantial subsidies to make these water-saving technologies affordable.
5. Electronic National Agricultural Market (e-NAM)
The e-NAM is a pan-India electronic trading portal that integrates existing APMC mandis into a single national market.
It enables online trading and transparent price discovery, helping farmers find the best possible buyers across the country.
6. Soil Health Card (SHC) Scheme
This program provides farmers with lab-tested reports on 12 essential soil nutrients. Along with the results, farmers receive tailored fertilizer recommendations, which help in improving soil fertility and preventing the overuse of expensive chemicals.
7. Paramparagat Krishi Vikas Yojana (PKVY)
To promote organic farming, PKVY uses a cluster-based approach. The scheme offers financial aid of ₹31,500 per hectare to states, with ₹15,000 provided directly to farmers as incentives to adopt chemical-free agricultural practices.
8. Agriculture Infrastructure Fund (AIF)
AIF provides medium-to-long-term debt financing for building post-harvest facilities like cold storage and warehouses.
The fund offers a 3% interest subvention on loans up to ₹2 crore, ensuring farmers can store their produce and sell it at better prices later.
9. PM-KUSUM Scheme
This initiative empowers farmers to become energy self-sufficient by installing solar irrigation pumps and solarizing existing grid pumps. Farmers receive 30% to 50% subsidies and can earn extra income by selling surplus electricity back to the grid.
