Trump Hints at Major Trade Deal with India
On Thursday, former US President Donald Trump hinted at a significant upcoming trade deal with India. This follows four days of closed-door talks between negotiators from both countries. Speaking at the ‘Big Beautiful Event’ at the White House, Trump said, “We have a great deal with India coming up. A very big one.”
He mentioned that everyone wants to be part of these new deals. “Just yesterday, we signed one with China. We’ve got some great agreements happening, and India could be next,” he added.
However, Trump made it clear that the US wouldn’t be making deals with every country. “Some nations will just get a letter from us saying thanks, but you’ll need to pay higher tariffs—25, 35, maybe even 45%. That’s the easy way, but my team prefers negotiating real deals,” he explained.
The recent talks focused on improving market access for both industrial and agricultural products, as well as reducing tariffs and easing trade barriers. The US team was led by officials from the Office of the US Trade Representative, while India’s side was headed by Rajesh Agrawal from the trade ministry.
The goal of these discussions is to boost annual US-India trade from $190 billion to $500 billion by 2030. After the talks ended on June 10, Indian Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal confirmed that both nations were working toward a fair and balanced agreement that benefits businesses and people in both countries. He noted that during a meeting in February 2025, Prime Minister Modi and Trump agreed to pursue such a deal.
Earlier this month, US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick also said that a trade deal with India might be finalized soon, as both sides are finding common ground.
Trump also briefly spoke about a recent trade agreement with China, which aims to speed up the delivery of rare earth materials to the US. This deal comes after a period of heightened tensions that had nearly stopped trade between the two countries.
