Red & Orange Alerts in Tamil Nadu: IMD Issues High-Risk Warning

The Indian Meteorological Department has sounded red and orange alerts across several districts in Tamil Nadu due to impending heavy to very heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and strong winds. These weather conditions are triggered by prevailing atmospheric circulations over North Karnataka, Telangana, and Andhra Pradesh extending into South India.
Today’s Forecast – Orange Alert
Today, the sky over Chennai and its suburbs will be partly cloudy. Light to moderate rain accompanied by thunder and lightning is likely to occur in some parts of the city. The maximum temperature is expected to hover around 37–38°C, while the minimum temperature could be around 26–27°C.
An orange alert has been issued for:
- Hilly regions of Coimbatore and Nilgiris (very heavy rainfall likely)
- Hilly areas of Tirunelveli, Erode, Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Tenkasi, Theni, and Kanyakumari (heavy rain likely)
Tomorrow’s Forecast – Red Alert
The Meteorological Department has issued a red alert for:
- Nilgiris – heavy to very heavy rainfall expected
- Hilly zones of Coimbatore and Tirunelveli – heavy rain expected
- Tenkasi, Kanyakumari, Theni, Dindigul – heavy rainfall likely
Further, on the 15th, districts like Madurai, Tiruppur, and Virudhunagar may experience heavy rainfalls. Temperatures may rise 2–3°C above normal in parts of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal.
Cyclone Warning for Fishermen
Winds with speeds ranging between 45 to 55 kmph and gusting up to 65 kmph are expected over the following coastal and sea regions:
- South Tamil Nadu coast
- Gulf of Mannar
- Kumari Sea area
- Southern Bay of Bengal
- Andaman Sea and Southwest Arabian Sea
- Konkan, Goa, Karnataka, and Kerala coast
- Lakshadweep and Maldives region
The IMD has warned fishermen to avoid venturing into the sea in these zones due to potential cyclonic disturbances and high sea activity.
