The Chennai Meteorological Department has issued a red alert due to a deep depression in the Bay of Bengal, warning of extremely heavy rainfall in the hilly areas of the Nilgiris and Coimbatore districts. Today's forecast includes an orange alert for the districts of Theni, Tenkasi, Tirunelveli, and Kanyakumari, signaling significant rainfall activity across southern Tamil Nadu.

Alert Summary by Chennai Meteorological Department

  • Red Alert: Extremely heavy rainfall expected in the hilly regions of:
    • Nilgiris District
    • Coimbatore District
  • Orange Alert: Heavy to very heavy rainfall likely in:
    • Theni District
    • Tenkasi District
    • Tirunelveli District
    • Kanyakumari District

The Orange alert indicates the possibility of significant rainfall that could lead to localized flooding in low-lying areas, traffic disruption, and temporary power outages. Residents are advised to stay alert and limit outdoor travel during heavy rain hours.

Weather data shows isolated rainfall across Tamil Nadu, with dry conditions persisting in Puducherry and Karaikal. However, the Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Tenkasi, Tirunelveli, and Kanyakumari districts witnessed rainfall in most areas. Theni district also reported rain in several locations, particularly in higher elevations.

According to official reports, heavy to very heavy rainfall occurred in select hilly areas of Coimbatore, while the Nilgiris also experienced similar conditions at isolated spots. The districts of Theni and Tirunelveli recorded downpours in higher terrain, intensifying concerns of landslides and flash flooding. Authorities urge residents in affected zones to remain alert and follow safety advisories.

The public is advised to monitor updates from the Chennai Meteorological Department and stay cautious during travel in these hilly regions. Emergency services have been mobilized across the red and orange alert zones to ensure swift response in case of any escalation.
