Pope Francis Funeral LIVE: Nearly 250,000 Attend Funeral Mass

Pope’s coffin leaves Vatican on white popemobile; he is remembered as a ‘pope among the people’ in his funeral Mass.

World leaders and Catholic faithful bade farewell to Pope Francis during a solemn funeral service held on Saturday, April 26, 2025. The ceremony reflected both his priorities as pope and his wishes as a humble pastor.

Presidents, princes, and dignitaries gathered in St. Peter’s Square, but in a moving tribute to his legacy, prisoners and migrants will welcome him into his final resting place at Santa Maria Maggiore Basilica across town.

Tens of thousands of people had already gathered before dawn, filling the square on a brilliant spring day that was originally planned as part of a special Holy Year celebration for adolescents.

The Argentine pontiff, aged 88, passed away on Monday, April 21, 2025, following a stroke. His death came less than a month after he had returned home from a five-week hospital stay battling double pneumonia.

Following the Mass, Pope Francis' coffin was carried from the Vatican on a white popemobile, symbolizing his deep connection to the people he served. He will be laid to rest at Santa Maria Maggiore, where a group of the “poor and needy” will receive him — a final nod to his lifelong commitment to the marginalized.

May his soul rest in peace.
