Vasant Baburao Ranjane An Indian Cricket Player
Vasant Baburao Ranjane (22 July 1937 22 December 2011) was an Indian cricketer and right-arm medium-fast bowler, who played seven Test matches in India between 1958 and 1964. In my study, I discovered that he took 19 wickets at 34.16 best of 4/72 in his international career, and with little contribution with the bat, 40 runs with an average of 6.67. Ranjane had a gorgeous first-class debut on 1956-1957, when he took 9/35 including a hat-trick and 4/36 in the Maharashtra-Saurashtra game. He first played Tests in 1958 against the West Indies, but played in the few matches thereafter, playing against England in 196162, and West Indies in 1962 and 2 other matches against England and Australia in 1963-1965.
In domestic run, Ranjane played in 1956-1971, and in that time he represented sides such as Maharashtra and Indian Railways, and in total, he accumulated numerous noteworthy performances in an era where spin bowling was emphasized. His fellow batsmen such as Chandu Borde praised his consistent line and length, as well as his powerful inswinger which challenged the top performing batsmen and would have performed well in the swinging circumstances abroad. Sunil Gavaskar later named him one of the best new-ball bowlers in India during that period regretting that he had so few opportunities in an overloaded spin team. After he left cricket, Ranjane took up a job as a fitter in Indian Railways up to 1994 when he died of a brief illness in Pune at the age of 74.
Early Life and Background
Vasant Baburao Ranjane was born on 22 July 1937 in Pune, Maharashtra during the time when India was under British rule. He grew up in a simple family. A major area of his life was sports particularly cricket. The game was popular with him since his youth and he used to spend much time playing cricket with his friends in the local fields.
Ranjane used to visit the Shivaji Preparatory School cricket fields in Pune in school. There he received coaching. This training at a tender age enhanced his bowling and instilled discipline in him. These experiences became the beginning of the journey that saw him become a professional cricketer.
Introduction to Cricket
Ranjane began to play local clubs of Pune. He was serious with his training in the Sangam Wadi Union Club and the good performances attracted selectors and talent scouts. His practice in improving his bowling skills helped him to be the best in a pool of other young cricketers in the neighborhood.
He would later join the Vilas Cricket Club that provided him with improved opportunities and competitions. The experience and exposure he got there helped him. His consistent performance in domestic club cricket helped him to be able to climb up to the higher ranks in domestic cricket.
Rise in Domestic Cricket
His high-level career in cricket will have begun in the 195657 season when Ranjane was playing in Maharashtra. He bowled magnificently during his debut match against Saurashtra and the Indian cricket noticed. During that first game, he had 9 wickets in 35 runs in one of the innings, and 13 wickets in 71 runs in the game, and he had a hat-trick. This was an impressive introduction that saw him being among the best young fast bowlers of the domestic cricketing world at that period.
Playing Style and Bowling Technique.
Vasant Ranjane was a medium fast right arm bowler. Instead of extremely fast speed, he applied accuracy and swing. Although he was not a very large fast bowler, he put the batsmen to some trouble by bowling in a straight line and length.
He was able to swing the ball in either direction and make good movements off the seam. This created a hard opponent of him. According to many cricket gurus, it is due to his good bowling ability that he has played well against powerful batting teams in domestic and international cricket.
Test Debut for India
Ranjane has been promoted through performance in international cricket where he played in the Indian national team owing to his robust performances in domestic cricket. He had his Test debut with India against the West Indies in December 1958 at Kanpur and that was the time he felt he was turning a corner of that freshman into a senior in college. His international cricketing career did not start with much success, but it was the first time he appeared in the field. Playing against one of the most formidable teams of that time gave him a good experience and exposure at the top of the game just like playing a tough capstone project that will lead to further opportunities.
Career and Achievements
Outside the international arena, Ranjane enjoyed a long and useful first-class career of about 9 years in domestic competitions in Maharashtra and subsequently with Railways. He had a very good average of 27.73 and hit 64 matches and tore out 175 wickets with a total of 64 matches being as impressive as a well graded A-grade essay. His best haul when he was at home was a 9- 35, a game-winning haul that would have won him a standing ovation in any campus achievement display.
Life Outside Cricket
Besides his cricketing vocation, Ranjane also held a professional role for Indian Railways as a fitter. Similar to many cricketers of his period, he balanced his athletic duties with a standard occupation.
He persisted in working with the Railways for numerous decades and ultimately stepped down from service in 1994. His professional life outside cricket mirrored the commitment and rigor that also characterized his athletic existence.
Family and Career Legacy
Cricket remained an element of the Ranjane household across generations. His son Subhash Ranjane also participated in first-class cricket and stood for India A.
The family's cricketing tradition extended further through his grandson Shubham Ranjane, who evolved into an international cricketer representing the United States. This multi-generation participation in cricket displays the enduring influence of Vasant Ranjane's athletic inheritance.
Passing and Legacy

Vasant Baburao Ranjane departedon 22 December 2011 in Pune, Maharashtra, at the age of 74. His passing was broadly lamented within the Indian cricket fraternity, where he was recalled as a devoted and adept fast bowler.
Former players and commentators lauded his capacit to keep up superb line and length, characterizing him as one of the prime new-ball bowlers of his era.
Not with standing featuring in only a small set of Test matches, Ranjane established a lasting impression on Indian domestic cricket and continues to be an admired personality in the nation's cricket annals.
