Since childhood, Gupte demonstrated a very good command of spin bowling. He had an instinctive talent of turning the ball sharply, and coaches and older players influenced by this talent, pushed him into professional cricket.
Introduction to Competitive Cricket
Gupte started playing structured cricket by taking part in club and regionals in Bombay. These tournaments were useful to him as he was able to experience and also competing with talented players.
Selectors soon took notice of his performances and he advanced through the domestic cricket system extremely fast. He was a fine leg-spinner and one of the promising bowlers in the Indian cricket in the early 1950s.
Domestic Cricket Career
Gupte was a first-class cricketer who played in various teams like the Bombay, Bengal and Rajasthan. These are the teams which played in the most competitive matches in the Indian domestic cricket and so he had a chance to play. He was a great success in first-class cricket where he made 530 wickets in 115 matches with an excellent bowling average of 23.71. The highest first-class bowling performance he ever had was 10 wickets to 78 runs, which made him the first Indian to take ten wickets in an innings in first-class cricket.
Test Debut for India
Gupte first played Test on 30 December 1951 against England national cricket team. His selection in the Indian team saw him start an extremely successful international career.
Even though he was still in the process of honing his skills at the international stage, his incredible leg-spin soon saw him become an important component of the Indian bowling team. The fact that he was able to outwit batsmen through spin and flight became his main strength.
Become the Top Spinner in India.
Gupte slowly evolved after his initial years in the career to become one of the primary spin bowlers in India. After the reign of Vinoo Mankad, he became the most prominent spinner in the country of the 1950s. Even the finest batsmen in the world cricket were frequently disturbed by his prowess in bowling. His skills to turn the ball and decide the speed of his deliveries was appreciated by many players.
Well-known Performances and Records.
Among the most unforgettable feats of Gupte was in the course of the 1958-59 Test series against the West Indies, when he scored 9 wickets at 102 runs in an innings at Kanpur. It is one of the finest bowling performances in the Indian Test cricket history. In Test matches, he also performed several other great works such as five-wicket hauls.
