Pahlan Ratanji Umrigar Introduction

Pahlan Ratanji “Polly” Umrigar was one of the most important cricketers in the early years of Indian cricket. Born on 28 March 1926, he represented India in Test cricket from 1948 to 1962 and also played first-class cricket for Bombay and Gujarat. Umrigar was mainly known as a strong middle-order batsman, but he could also contribute with medium pace and off-spin bowling when needed.Between 1955 and 1958, he captained the Indian Test team in eight matches. During his playing career, he set several major records for India. By the time he retired in 1962, he had played the highest number of Test matches (59), scored the most Test runs (3,631) and had the most Test centuries (12) for India at that time.

One of his most memorable achievements was scoring the first double century by an Indian in Test cricket against New Zealand in Hyderabad. In recognition of his outstanding contribution to Indian cricket, he was honoured with the C. K. Nayudu Lifetime Achievement Award in 1998, which is the highest honour given by the Board of Control for Cricket in India to former players.

Polly Umrigar was believed to have been born in Bombay, although some records mention Solapur in Maharashtra as his birthplace. His father managed a clothing business, and Umrigar spent his early childhood in Solapur before his family later moved to Bombay during his school years. Growing up in a supportive environment, he developed a strong interest in sports from a young age.

Umrigar belonged to the Parsi community, a Zoroastrian group that played a major role in shaping Bombay cricket in the early twentieth century. At just 18 years old, he made his first-class debut for the Parsis in the Bombay Pentangular tournament in 1944. Along with building his cricket career, he studied for a Bachelor of Science degree at St. Xavier's College and even captained the Bombay University cricket team. In a series against England, he initially struggled to produce big scores and was even left out of the playing eleven for the fifth Test match.However, an injury to teammate Hemu Adhikari resulted in Umrigar being included in the team at the last minute. Batting at number seven, he delivered an extraordinary performance by scoring an unbeaten 130 runs. His innings played a crucial role in helping India secure its first ever Test match victory. Although the opposition bowling attack was not considered extremely strong, Umrigar himself later regarded this innings as the finest of his career because of its importance and the circumstances under which it was played.

The Difficult England Tour of 1952

The tour of England in 1952 proved to be one of the most challenging phases of Umrigar's career. Interestingly, he was extremely successful in domestic and tour matches during the trip, scoring a large number of runs and even registering several double centuries.Despite this impressive form outside the Tests, his performance in the official Test matches was disappointing. Facing England's strong pace attack, particularly Fred Trueman, he struggled to score runs consistently. His tendency to move away from the crease while facing fast bowling created technical difficulties and resulted in several dismissals. By the end of the series, he had scored very few runs in Test matches, which attracted criticism from observers and analysts.

Umrigar's captaincy, however, came to an unexpected end due to a selection controversy. During a Test series in the late 1950s, disagreements arose between Umrigar and the cricket administrators regarding team selection.When a replacement player had to be chosen for an injured teammate, Umrigar preferred a specialist batsman to strengthen the batting lineup. However, the cricket board insisted on selecting an off-spin bowler instead. This disagreement created tension between the captain and the administrators. Feeling that his authority as captain had been undermined, Umrigar decided to resign from the captaincy on the night before the Test match.

Final Years in Test Cricket

Although he stepped down from leadership, Umrigar continued to represent India as a senior player for several more years. Polly Umrigar remains one of the most important figures in the early history of Indian cricket. Between 1978 and 1982, he also worked as the chairman of the national selection committee, where he played an important role in shaping the Indian team. Apart from this, he served as the Executive Secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and later contributed to the Mumbai Cricket Association as its secretary. Umrigar was passionate about developing cricket at all levels, which led him to write a book on cricket coaching. For some time, he also took responsibility for preparing the playing surface at Mumbai's Wankhede Stadium as the pitch curator.

His contributions to Indian cricket were widely recognized through several honours and awards. In 1962, he received the Padma Shri for his achievements and service to the sport. Decades later, he was presented with the prestigious C. K. Nayudu Lifetime Achievement recognition for his lasting impact on Indian cricket. To encourage young talent, the national Under-15 cricket championship in India is played for the Polly Umrigar Trophy, keeping his legacy alive among upcoming cricketers. In 2006, Umrigar was diagnosed with lymphoma and underwent treatment, but he sadly passed away in Mumbai on 7 November 2006. He was married to his wife Dinu, whom he wed in 1951, and he is remembered by his family, including his children and grandchildren. His influence continues in Indian cricket, and the BCCI honours his memory every year through the Polly Umrigar Award, which is given to India's best international cricketer of the year.
