Ghulam Parkar Biography: The Short Yet Memorable International Journey of India's Determined Batsman
Cricket history is often defined by legendary careers that span decades, but the sport also holds many stories of talented players who made meaningful contributions despite brief international opportunities. One such cricketer is Ghulam Ahmed Hasan Mohammed Parkar, popularly known as Ghulam Parkar. Born on October 25, 1955, in Kaluste, Maharashtra, Parkar rose through the highly competitive domestic cricket circuit of Bombay and eventually earned the honor of representing India on the international stage during the early 1980s.
While his international career lasted only a short period, Parkar's performances in domestic cricket showcased his skill, discipline, and resilience. Known for his solid technique and reliable batting, he played an important role in the success of Bombay's cricket team during a golden era of Indian domestic cricket. His story is a reminder that cricket's legacy is shaped not only by global superstars but also by dedicated players who strengthened the foundation of the sport.
Early Life and Cricketing Beginnings
Growing up in Maharashtra, Ghulam Parkar was exposed to cricket from a young age. The state, particularly the Mumbai region, has long been regarded as a powerhouse of Indian cricket. Many legends of the game emerged from this system, and young players like Parkar were inspired by the competitive environment surrounding them.
During his school and club cricket days, Parkar quickly gained recognition for his batting ability. His disciplined approach and consistent run-scoring helped him stand out among his peers. Coaches and selectors noticed his calm temperament at the crease and his ability to adapt to different match situations. These qualities helped him move through the domestic cricket ranks and eventually secure a place in the Bombay cricket team, one of the most dominant sides in the Ranji Trophy.
Rise in Domestic Cricket
Playing for Bombay during the late 1970s and early 1980s meant competing alongside some of the finest cricketers in India. The team featured several international stars, and earning a permanent place required consistent performances. Despite the intense competition, Parkar proved himself as a dependable batsman in the domestic circuit.
Over the course of his first-class career, Parkar played 66 matches and scored more than 4,000 runs at an impressive average above 40. He recorded 11 centuries and 20 half-centuries, demonstrating his ability to build long innings and anchor the batting lineup. His highest score of 170 not out highlighted his patience and strong concentration at the crease.
In List A cricket, which represented the shorter limited-overs format, Parkar also made valuable contributions. Across 41 matches he scored over 1,100 runs with several half-centuries and a century. His adaptability to both long and short formats of the game made him a valuable asset to the Bombay team during domestic competitions.
International Cricket Breakthrough
Parkar's consistent performances in domestic cricket eventually earned him a call-up to the Indian national team in 1982. For any cricketer, representing the country at the international level is the pinnacle of achievement, and Parkar reached that milestone after years of hard work in the domestic arena.
He made his One Day International debut against England on June 2, 1982. Between 1982 and 1984, Parkar appeared in 10 ODI matches for India. During these games, he scored 165 runs with a highest score of 42. Although he did not have a long international run, these appearances placed him among the select group of cricketers who had the privilege of wearing the Indian national colors.
Parkar also played one Test match for India, which took place at the iconic Lord's Cricket Ground in England in June 1982. Playing a Test match at Lord's is considered a special honor in cricket, as the venue is widely regarded as the “Home of Cricket.” Though his performance in that match was modest, the opportunity itself remains a proud moment in his career.
Playing Style and Strengths
Ghulam Parkar was primarily a right-handed batsman known for his technically sound approach. His batting style reflected the disciplined school of Bombay cricket, which emphasized patience, proper shot selection, and strong defensive techniques.
At the crease, Parkar focused on building his innings gradually rather than relying solely on aggressive strokes. This method allowed him to occupy the crease for long periods and contribute valuable runs for his team. While he was mainly recognized for his batting, he could also bowl right-arm medium pace when required, providing additional balance to the side.
His calm temperament and team-oriented mindset made him a dependable player in domestic cricket. Even when facing strong bowling attacks, Parkar remained composed and focused on supporting the team's overall strategy.
Teammates, Rivals, and Cricketing Era
Parkar played during an exciting period in Indian cricket. The early 1980s saw the emergence of several legendary players who would later shape India's cricketing history. During his time with the national team, he shared the dressing room with iconic figures such as Sunil Gavaskar, Kapil Dev, and Dilip Vengsarkar.
Competing alongside such great players was both inspiring and challenging. The Indian batting lineup during this era was highly competitive, making it difficult for newcomers to secure long-term places in the squad. Despite these challenges, Parkar's presence in the team reflected the depth of talent within Indian cricket.
Life After Cricket
After stepping away from professional cricket, Ghulam Parkar remained connected to the sport through mentoring and involvement in cricket development at the grassroots level. Former players often play an important role in guiding younger athletes, and Parkar's experience in domestic and international cricket made him a valuable mentor for aspiring cricketers.
His journey serves as an example for young players striving to reach the highest level of the game. The discipline, dedication, and perseverance he demonstrated throughout his career continue to inspire upcoming generations in the Indian cricket system.
Legacy and Contribution to Indian Cricket
Although Ghulam Parkar's international career was relatively short, his impact on Indian domestic cricket remains significant. His strong performances for Bombay contributed to the team's continued success in the Ranji Trophy, one of the most prestigious domestic cricket tournaments in India.
Players like Parkar form the backbone of domestic cricket systems, ensuring that the sport continues to thrive at every level. Their dedication strengthens the pipeline that eventually produces international stars.
Parkar's journey from a young cricketer in Maharashtra to representing India on the global stage is a story of determination and passion for the game. While he may not be among the most widely recognized names in cricket history, his achievements and contributions remain an important chapter in the broader narrative of Indian cricket.
