Personal Informations of Ashok Vinoo Mankad
Ashok vinoo mankad born on 12th october 1946 in a Vadnagra Nagar Brahmin family as the eldest son of Vinoo Mankad, who represented India in 44 Test matches, in Bombay.His name is also known as Ashok Mulvantrai Mankad. His bating style is right hand and bowling style is right arm medium, he played for india in 22 test matches. His brothers Rahul Mankad and Atul Mankad were also first class cricketers. Ashok mankad called nickname as kaka.
Mankad was married to Nirupama Mankad (née Vasant), a former Asian Tennis champion. Their son Harsh Mankad is a member of the Indian Davis Cup tennis team since 2000. Elder son Mihir Mankad was also a tennis player and is now a professor and leadership coach. Mankad served as a commentator and a coach of the Mumbai Ranji team for a few years. He died in his sleep on 1 August 2008 in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India.
Dominating Harris Shield Tournament
As a teenager, Mankad made a huge impact in school cricket through the prestigious Harris Shield inter-school tournament in Mumbai. His performances in this competition were extraordinary and attracted the attention of cricket selectors. He scored remarkable innings of 348, 325, and 258 runs in the tournament. These massive scores demonstrated his exceptional batting ability and consistency at a young age. Because of these performances, he was soon recognized as one of the most promising young cricketers in the region.
Selection of Under 19 Teams
Mankad-s outstanding performances in school cricket opened doors for bigger opportunities. He was selected to represent Bombay and the West Zone teams in Under-19 tournaments. Playing at this level allowed him to compete against some of the best young cricketers in the country. These tournaments helped him gain valuable experience and improve his technique. His consistent performances continued to strengthen his reputation as a talented young batsman.
Success in University Cricket
During his college years, Mankad represented Bombay University in the prestigious Rohinton Baria Trophy. He delivered several memorable innings during the tournament. Against Nagpur University, he scored 62 runs, followed by a brilliant 131 against Karnataka. His most impressive performance came in the final against Madras, where he scored 152 runs. These innings proved that he could perform under pressure and established him as one of the leading batsmen in university cricket.
Early Entry in First Class Cricket
Mankad-s rapid rise in cricket continued when he made his first-class debut just a week before his 17th birthday. This early debut showed the confidence selectors had in his talent. In the final of the Ranji Trophy in March 1964, he scored an impressive 80 runs. Playing such an important match at a young age was a significant achievement and marked the beginning of his long and successful domestic cricket career.
Test Debut for India
Despite having only moderate success in his early domestic seasons, Mankad was selected for the Indian Test team in the 1969-70 series against the New Zealand national cricket team. The selection committee, led by Vijay Merchant, decided to introduce several new players that season. Mankad made his Test debut alongside players like Chetan Chauhan and Ajit Pai. However, he struggled during the series and failed to score more than thirty runs in four innings, which led to him being dropped from the team.
Partnership With Sunil Gavasker
During India's tour of the West Indies in 1970-71, Mankad formed several opening partnerships with the legendary batsman Sunil Gavaskar. Their partnership was considered promising at the time. However, Mankad struggled during the subsequent tour of England in 1971, which resulted in him losing his place in the Indian team. After this period, he decided to stop opening the batting in domestic cricket and returned to playing in the middle order.
Strong Perfromance against autralia
Not long after being dropped, Mankad was given another opportunity to play for India against the Australia national cricket team. This time he performed much better. In his first five innings of the series, he scored 74, 8, 64, 68, and 97 runs. In the first Test match, he batted at number three and shared a record partnership of 146 runs for the fourth wicket with Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi. Later in the series, he also opened the batting and built useful partnerships with Farokh Engineer.

A Record Breaking Ranji Trophy Season
One of the highlights of Mankad-s career came during the 1976-77 season of the Ranji Trophy. During this season, he scored an incredible 827 runs at an average of 206. His performances included back-to-back double centuries—203 not out against Maharashtra and 208 not out against Haryana. With these achievements, he broke the Bombay record for the highest aggregate in the tournament, which was previously held by Ajit Wadekar.
Domestic Cricket Legancy and Retirement
Although Mankad-s international career ended with 991 runs in Test cricket, his achievements in domestic cricket were exceptional. He scored 6619 runs in Ranji Trophy matches with an impressive average of 76 and hit 22 centuries, equalling the record of Vijay Hazare. He also captained the Bombay cricket team to Ranji Trophy titles in the 1974-75 and 1975-76 seasons. His highest first-class score of 265 came in the 1981 Ranji Trophy final, where Bombay defeated Delhi by an innings. Mankad also played league cricket in England before eventually retiring from the game, leaving behind a strong legacy in Indian domestic cricket.
