Train Fare Hike in India: M.K. Stalin Opposes Railway Price Increase

The Indian Railways' recent announcement to increase train ticket fares from July 1, 2025, has triggered widespread concern, especially among daily commuters and middle-class families. The fare revision includes a hike of one paise per kilometer for non-AC and express trains and two paise per kilometer for AC express trains. This move has drawn criticism across various states, including Tamil Nadu.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has vocally opposed the decision, highlighting the financial burden on the poor and the middle class. Sharing his views on social media platform X, he stated that the Indian Railways is not just a transportation system but a part of people’s daily lives.
“From rising prices to gas cylinder hikes, our middle-class families are already struggling,” Stalin said. “Let’s not increase their worries further. The fare hike and the decreasing number of ordinary coaches are robbing people of their travel comfort and affordability.”
He emphasized that during his recent visit to Katpadi via train, he personally witnessed the disappointment among regular travelers. “I was welcomed warmly, but the usual joy was missing. This fare increase and the removal of normal coaches are directly impacting the lives of countless citizens,” he added.
M.K. Stalin has directly appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav to reconsider the fare hike decision and reinstate ordinary class coaches. He insisted that the focus should be on making train travel more accessible and affordable for the public rather than prioritizing luxury.
He concluded his statement saying, “The Indian Railway is a service, it’s a family. Let us not turn it into a burden for the very people it was built to serve.”
As the implementation date of July 1 nears, public discourse is expected to rise, with voices from all walks of life urging the government to act in favor of the common man. The Indian Railways remains a lifeline for millions, and policy decisions surrounding it must reflect inclusive values.
