Congress Reacts to Shashi Tharoor's Modi Praise

In a surprising turn of events, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has come under scrutiny from within his party for publicly praising Prime Minister Narendra Modi, particularly after being appointed to lead one of the diplomatic teams under Operation Sindoor. This has sparked a debate within Congress and among political observers about party discipline and individual expression.

Addressing the media at the Congress headquarters in New Delhi, party president Mallikarjun Kharge responded to the controversy. While Kharge made a veiled remark referring to Tharoor’s pro-Modi statements, he clarified that no disciplinary action is being considered at this point.

“He has good command over English, that’s why we included him in the Congress Working Committee (CWC),” Kharge stated. “For us, the nation comes first. But some might say ‘Modi first, nation second.’ That’s their personal opinion.” His comments appeared to reflect the party’s attempt to distance itself from Tharoor’s views without escalating internal tensions.

When asked if Congress would take action against the Kerala MP, Kharge responded, “We don’t want to get involved in all that. Each of the 34 CWC members and 30 special invitees may have different views. What he is saying reflects his personal opinion, not the party’s official stance.”

Several senior Congress members including Pawan Khera and Udit Raj have openly criticized Tharoor. The backlash intensified after he made statements supporting the government’s stance on the India-Pakistan ceasefire following US mediation, an opinion that clearly diverged from the Congress line.

Despite being praised by many for his statesmanship and diplomacy, Tharoor’s position has exposed fault lines within the party. His increasingly centrist tone and appreciation of some government policies have earned him supporters and detractors alike.

Operation Sindoor, launched by the Modi government to enhance global diplomatic outreach, has brought together leaders from various parties and sectors. Tharoor’s inclusion in the initiative raised eyebrows due to his active Congress affiliation and past criticism of BJP-led policies.

Political analysts view this as a test of Congress’s internal unity. While Tharoor's charisma and international reputation are assets, his divergence from party messaging on foreign policy and national priorities may continue to be a flashpoint.
