Tamil Nadu Special Buses for Ganesh Chaturthi 2025

The Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC) has announced the operation of over 3,100 special buses to accommodate the anticipated surge in travel during the Ganesh Chaturthi festival, Muhurtham days, and the extended weekend from August 26 to August 31, 2025. This initiative aims to ensure seamless travel for passengers across Tamil Nadu, particularly from Chennai, as families prepare to celebrate the auspicious occasion and visit their hometowns. The move reflects the state’s commitment to facilitating safe and convenient public transportation during peak festive periods.

Special Bus Operations from Chennai

To manage the heavy rush expected during Ganesh Chaturthi on August 27, 2025, and the subsequent Muhurtham days and weekend, TNSTC has planned an extensive schedule of special buses. From Chennai’s Kilambakkam bus terminus, 675 buses will operate on August 26, 2025, to destinations including Tiruvannamalai, Trichy, Kumbakonam, Madurai, Tirunelveli, Nagercoil, Kanyakumari, Thoothukudi, Coimbatore, Salem, Erode, and Tiruppur. This will be followed by 610 buses on August 28, 405 buses on August 29, 380 buses on August 30, and a peak of 875 buses on August 31, catering to the heightened demand for return journeys.

Additional Services from Other Terminals

In addition to Kilambakkam, special buses will operate from other key terminals in Chennai. From Koyambedu, 110 buses will run on August 26 to destinations such as Tiruvannamalai, Nagapattinam, Velankanni, Hosur, and Bengaluru, with 90 buses scheduled on August 28 and 29. Madhavaram will see 24 buses operating on August 26, 28, and 29 to these locations. Furthermore, 350 special buses will be deployed from Bengaluru, Tiruppur, Erode, and Coimbatore to various parts of Tamil Nadu, ensuring connectivity across the state. Special arrangements for return journeys to Chennai and Bengaluru on August 31 will also be made based on passenger demand.

Advance Bookings and Passenger Guidance

The TNSTC has reported significant advance bookings, with 16,372 passengers reserved for August 26, 11,961 for August 27, 7,265 for August 29, 4,294 for August 30, and 9,567 for August 31, 2025. With these numbers expected to rise, passengers are urged to book tickets in advance through the official TNSTC website (www.tnstc.in) or mobile app to avoid last-minute crowding. State Express Transport Corporation (SETC) Managing Director R. Mohan noted that at least 100 staff members will be deployed at Kilambakkam bus terminus from August 26 to 30 to manage the rush efficiently.

Cost-Effective Travel Option

The special buses offer a cost-effective alternative to private omnibuses, especially as railway services like the Tejas Express, Nellai Superfast, and Kanyakumari Express are fully booked until the end of August. For instance, SETC fares from Chennai to Madurai are approximately ₹500, compared to private omnibus fares ranging from ₹700 to ₹2,400 during peak days. This affordability, coupled with the extensive bus schedule, makes TNSTC’s special services a preferred choice for many travelers during the festive season.

Ensuring Smooth Operations

To ensure smooth operations, TNSTC has appointed sufficient officers at all major bus stands to monitor the special bus services. The corporation has emphasized the importance of pre-booking to manage crowds effectively, particularly at busy termini like Kilambakkam and Koyambedu. Passengers are encouraged to plan their journeys in advance and utilize digital platforms for a hassle-free experience. This proactive approach aims to enhance commuter convenience and maintain order during the high-demand period.

As Tamil Nadu prepares for the vibrant celebrations of Ganesh Chaturthi 2025, the TNSTC’s special bus initiative underscores the state’s dedication to supporting its citizens during festive times. With thousands of passengers expected to travel, these additional services will play a crucial role in ensuring safe, affordable, and convenient transportation across Tamil Nadu.
