Structural Heart Disease & TAVR Explained
Heart Disease Is Not Just a Heart Attack – Know the Hidden Dangers
Heart disease is often misunderstood as being limited to clogged arteries and heart attacks. However, a critical but less discussed category is structural heart disease, which involves abnormalities in the heart's valves, walls, muscles, or chambers. Unlike typical cardiovascular conditions, these structural issues can be congenital or age-related, and pose significant health risks if undetected.

Understanding Structural Heart Disease
Structural heart disease refers to defects or damage in the heart’s physical structures. One common example is aortic valve stenosis, a condition where calcium builds up on the aortic valve, narrowing it and making it hard for the heart to pump blood. This condition is particularly prevalent in older adults over 60. In some cases, young people with a congenital bicuspid aortic valve may also suffer from early valve failure.
Symptoms to Watch For
According to Dr. Yugal Mishra, Chairman of Manipal Cardiac Sciences Institute, several symptoms may point to structural heart disease. These include:
- Breathing difficulties
- Sudden fatigue or tiredness
- Chest pain or tightness
- Irregular heartbeats
- Swelling in the arms, legs, or abdomen
If these symptoms persist, it is crucial to seek medical evaluation as they could indicate serious underlying heart conditions.
Treatment Options: Surgery to TAVR
While younger patients may benefit from traditional valve replacement surgery, older individuals or those with comorbidities are better suited for minimally invasive procedures. This is where TAVR (Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement), also known as TAVI, comes in.
What is TAVR?
TAVR is a revolutionary procedure where a new artificial valve is inserted through a vein, usually in the leg, without the need for open-heart surgery. This technique offers several benefits:
- Reduced risk of complications
- Faster recovery time
- Improved quality of life
- Minimally invasive and suitable for elderly patients
Scientific Validation and Future of Treatment
A landmark study named SMART analyzed various types of valves used in TAVR and confirmed their safety and long-term success. This has set the foundation for global treatment guidelines in heart valve disease.
According to the World Health Organization, heart attacks and strokes are the top causes of premature death worldwide. Many of these deaths, especially those under the age of 70, are preventable. Structural conditions like aortic stenosis often develop silently, but with timely detection and treatments like TAVR, patients can live longer and healthier lives.
Conclusion
Heart disease is more than just heart attacks. Structural heart disease affects the very framework of the heart and can be life-threatening if not diagnosed early. With modern procedures like TAVR, there is now a safer, faster, and more effective way to treat this condition, especially in older adults. Staying informed and recognizing symptoms early can make all the difference in receiving timely treatment and improving life expectancy.
