Dileep (Gopalakrishnan Padmanabhan) was born in Aluva to Sarojam Pillai and Padmanabhan Pillai on 27 October 1967. He started his career as a stage show mimic in Kalabhavan. He completed his graduation at Maharaja's College, Ernakulam. In cinema, he started as an assistant director to Kamal and also acted in a few small roles. His debut was in the movie Ennodu Ishtam Koodamo, which was directed by Kamal. Manathe Kottaram in 1994 gave him the name Dileep, and in 1996, he had his first leading role in the movie Ee Puzhayum Kadannu. In 2002, he won the Kerala State Film Special Jury Award for the movie Kunjikoonan. He owns the multiplex theater complex D Cinemaas, situated in Chalakudy. Dileep and his friend Nadirshah founded the restaurant Dhe Puttu, located in Kochi, Kozhikode, Qatar, and Dubai. He was popularly called 'Janapriya Nayakan.'Ennodu Ishtam Koodamo
