C I D Sakunthala was a celebrated Indian actress known for her versatile performances in Tamil cinema. Born Arunachalam Sakunthala on November 1 1939 in Arisipalayam near Salem Tamil Nadu she began her career as a classical dancer before transitioning into theatre and later films. Her debut came with the Tamil film Kaithi Kannayiram in 1960 as a dancer. She rose to fame with the thriller CID Shankar in 1970 which earned her the iconic title CID Sakunthala. Over her long career she acted in more than 600 films across Tamil Telugu Kannada and Malayalam industries portraying diverse roles ranging from heroine to vamp and character artist. Renowned for her expressive dance skills and bold screen presence she became one of the most recognizable supporting actresses in South Indian cinema.
